Library Experiences of the Past and Present

As I was reading over my interviews of two co-workers’s youth library experiences I was thinking of my kids’ library experiences. How different they are and how much more different it would be for our next generation.

In the past, we did not have the luxury of certain privileges.  Some didn’t get the chance to have a library card or own books.  I look at my kids and once I enter a bookstore, I go crazy and start buying them all kinds of picture books. Perhaps I do that because I didn’t have that luxury. Not only that but as I recall as a child we didn’t go as often to libraries. Now, I feel blessed that my daycare person takes them to the library every Monday for Cubbies.

Also, technology has definitely changed so much.  How many years have we been checking out books? Now, we have e-readers.  Not to long ago, I got an ipad and instead of buying books we started to check out books through our library consortium or purchased e-reader copies. Definitely saved us space at home.  I think that’s what convinced my husband to get us an ipad.  We had books all over our apartment.

I think libraries are the place to create memories.  Does not matter how much technology has changed I think there will always be room for libraries.
