Library Locations Matter

Since I started working at libraries, I didn’t think how the location of libraries really mattered.  Indeed it does.  It’s important to take into consideration what is around your library.  What businesses are around?  What are your resources? Who are your patrons?

It’s very important for marketing purposes. Once finding who uses your library you can easily market your programs and your collection. I find marketing is hard when you are not well informed of your surroundings.  I have learned it the hard way.  Definitely, I had to do some research.

Its finding the needs of the community that takes time to figure out, especially if you are new to their community.  Moreover, it is important to know where the schools are and what distance they are from your library.  Finding out where you are in the community can help in marketing your programs and your library. It also lets you know how much harder it would be to market your programs to those who are farther from your library.

For example, the middle school is in front of our library but the high school is about two miles away.  It is harder to market to the high school students because of their location.
